Campocatino - Jewel of Garfagnana

Campocatino is a mountain resort in the Apuan Alps located in the municipality of Vagli di Sotto. It is located at 1000 meters above sea level and embodies also a large basin of glacial origin, testifying the extension of the Quaternary glaciation of the Apennine era. Since 1991 the area has become a natural oasis of the LIPU (Italian League for the Protection of Birds, founded in 1965): there are several species of birds, including birds of prey, where they breed thanks to the coexistence of the different environments in the area.

Various CAI (Italian Alpine Club, born in 1863) hiking trails start at the Oasis of Campocatino.

Famous in Campocatino are the "caselli", typical pastoral constructions  preserved with their ancient characteristics and surrounded by greenery and silence. Some of them are private properties but  can be rented: especially by hikers, who can stay overnight and be already on site and easily start their  excursion in the valley. Among the typical huts of the area you can stop by Campocatino Refuge, the only - mountain hut in the area.

Campocatino is known  as  the "jewel of the Garfagnana" a secluded and peaceful place offering a great variety of trails, landscapes, different animal species and its characteristic  stone huts.
