On a hill 732 m. a.s.l. in a strategic position commanding the mid Serchio valley, the rocca of Trassilico occupies the highest part of the homonymous village.
The village itself, crossed by roads converging towards the fortress, proves with the wealth of its palaces and religious buildings the importance of the place during the rule of the Dukes of Este when it was main village in the vicariate and seat of a podestà.
The walls and a semicircular tower underline the inaccessibility of the rocca, which was particularly important as it controlled a territory rich in ores necessary to supply and forge firearms.

Recent work aimed at strengthening and renovating the fortress should enhance its value as cultural and tourist attraction.
Wedged as it was into Lucca's territory, Trassilico represented in the XVth century the southernmost outpost of the Duchy of Este. The military architect Pasio Pasi who worked on several projects in Garfagnana supervised extension works on the fortress during the harsh conflict with the Republic of Lucca in 1613; these works were aimed at strengthening its defences and making it more suited to lodge heavy artillery. Unfavourable natural events caused its rapid decline beginning from the XVIIIth century when the podestà's residence was moved from the rocca to a building inside the village.
