The portico of the Church of SS Pietro and Paolo contains two monuments to the Fallen, as memorial to the young heroes of the first and second world war.The monument related to the civil and military victims of the second world war is formed by five marble squares (made of white marble of Apuane), two of these are carved high-relief. In the panel on the left of the monument it is represented a young soldier leaving for the front, while he greets his family in despair. The man is dressed and behind him you can see the door of the home. In the second panel it is represented the coming back of the soldier who is naked (because he is defeated). Behind him you can see the destroyed town. On the extremities of both panels, you read the names of the Fallen. The monument related to the Fallen of the first war is a marble altar on which the names of the Fallen are engraved. In front of the altar there are a votive lamp and two marble vases.

Date of realization

You have to distinguish two realizations phases. The first monument made as memorial of the military and civil victims of the second world war dates back to the first after-war period and it has been inaugurated on 27th August 1950. The lower altar dates back to the first nineties and it has been solemnly veiled on 12th July 1992.

Customer

Probably, the constitution of the committee of the monument of the second war dates back to the first after-war period, 1947. The monument in honour of the Fallen of the first war has been realized thanks to the action of a committee belonging to ANCR of Lucca, whose chairmanship has been given to the President of the local section of Castelnuovo Garfagnana.

Author

Unfortunately, we do not have any precise news about the commission of the marble altar. The author of the the monument related to the civil and military victims of the second world war was Pellegrino Banella.

Notes

The loggia of the church of SS Pietro e Paolo was built using two carved stone arches and pilasters of the oratory of S. Croce destroyed by bombs in the last war. The loggia is delimited by a wrought iron gate, on which are depicted four panels depicting the Aurora, the Day, the Evening and the Night, an expression of the rotation of the earth around its axis and four panels with the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, determined by the revolutionary movement of the earth around the sun. At the center are represented Hate and Love, which dance under the Tree of Life.
