The public will be able to retrace their heritage, thanks to an initiative by the Archaeological Museum in Camaiore which sees the opening of a hiking trail along Via Francigena. The opening hike will take place Saturday 27 July from 17.30 (meeting point at the crossroads leading to Candalla).
After a long process of restoration, safety checks and detailed study of the route through the olive groves alongside the medieval ruins, it is possible to reach the medieval castle of Montecastrense, one of the key stopping points along the old pilgrims’ trail.
Situated on the Lombardia Road, it provided a good look-out point across the valley, allowing for the checking the passing of enemies, merchants and pilgrims from above.
Participants will receive a leaflet with the Castle’s history and the French Way’s Pilgrim booklet, that will be stamped at every stop along Sigerico’s Trail.
The guided tour of the castle ruins and village houses with the archaeologist Dr. Gabriele Gattiglia, will be followed by a “medieval aperitif” and a reading by Giorgio Gori of episodes of life and destruction of Montecastrense’s castle from “Histories of Camaiore” by the sixteenth century’s historian Bianco Bianchi.

From Lucca take the A11 – Firenze Mare towards Pisa Nord, exit Lucca Ovest. Follow the A12 towards Viareggio-Genova and take the Viareggio-Camaiore exit. Follow SS1 in direction Camaiore and merge onto the road for Montecastrese.
The junction for Candalla, going in the direction of the village, can be reached from the road leading to Casoli.

The safety works on the pathways have been financed by Alta Versilia Town Councils’ Union.
The multilingual information panels were created by the Culture and Presidential Office of the Provincial Authorities of Lucca based on results of the archaeological digs by Camaiore Museum.
The Santa Maria Assunta Parish and the local charity “Millefiori” collaborated in the planning of the trail in the olive groves and maintenance of the signs and panels along it.
The “French Way Pilgrim Booklets” were produced by the European Vie Francigene Association and can also be found at the Arte Sacra Museum or Citizen’s Bureau.

La cartellonistica multilingue è stata realizzata a cura del Servizio Presidenza e Cultura della Provincia di Lucca sulla base dei risultati degli scavi archeologici del Museo di Camaiore.
La Parrocchia di Santa Maria Assunta e la Cooperativa Sociale “Millefiori” hanno collaborato attivamente per rendere possibile la progettazione del percorso negli oliveti, assicurando anche la manutenzione della sentieristica attrezzata.
I libretti del “Pellegrino Francigeno” sono realizzati dall’Associazione Europea delle Vie Francigene (e disponibili anche presso il Museo di Arte Sacra o presso l’Ufficio del Cittadino).
