Saturday 12 October marks the start of the ninth edition of the festival dedicated to the women of jazz, organised by Circolo Lucca Jazz, Lucca Town Council and Provincial Authorities of Lucca with funding from the Regional Authorities of Tuscany as part of the “Toscana dei festival”, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca and Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca, under the artistic direction of Patrizia Landi.

Four evenings, between 12 and 19 October, featuring a host of excellent music and much more. The festival will be anticipated on Thursday 10 October, 21.30 at the Cinema Centrale, by a viewing of the short film “Daybreak Express” by D. A. Pennebaker, on the music of Duke Ellington (U.S.A., 1953), in collaboration with the Circolo del Cinema.

This event is also accompanied by a preview of the exhibition “Women in Jazz”; a selection of 10 photographs of shots from previous editions of the festival between 2006 and 2012 by Laura Casotti, official photographer of Lucca Jazz Donna. The complete exhibition will be on show at next year’s edition.

The first event will take place at Palazzo Ducale, while the others will be held at the San Girolamo theatre, as in previous years.

The concerts will be presented by Michela Panigada.

Tickets: concerts 17, 18 and 19 October, full price 12 euro, reduced 8 euro (reductions for members of Circolo Lucca Jazz, over 65s and under 25s, and students of music schools with membership card. The concert of 12 October and the afternoon concert-lesson of 18 October are free admission, and those who take part in the concert-lesson are entitled to a reduced evening ticket (free admission for under 25s).

Thursday 10 October, 21.30, in collaboration with the Circolo del Cinema, there will be a viewing of the short film “Daybreak Express” by D. A. Pennebaker, on the music of Duke Ellington (U.S.A., 1953, duration 5 minutes) at Cinema Centrale in Lucca.

Saturday 12 October, 21.15, at Palazzo Ducale (Sala Ademollo) “Quando la musica è donna”.
The first set features a performance by the Gershwin Quintet composed of Letizia Ragazzini on flute and soprano sax, Mariella Donnaloia on alto sax, Isabella Fabbri on tenor sax, Laura Rocchegiani on baritone sax and Maria Giulia Cester on piano.
The second set features Barbara Casini on vocals, guitar and percussion and Stefania Tallini on piano, presenting the “Bate Boca” project.
Free admission.

Thursday 17 October, 21.15, in the San Girolamo Theatre “Le emozioni degli strumenti” (The emotions of the instruments). In the first set “The Italian Color of Jazz” with Igor Palmieri on tenor sax, Fulvio Chiara on trumpet, Manuela Capelli on piano, Isabella Rizzo on bass and Laura Klain (previous guest of the festival with the Prize for new talent) on drums.
In the second set Francesca Bertazzo Hart on guitar and vocals presents his new project “The Grace of Gryce” at Lucca Jazz Donna, dedicated to the saxophone player Gigi Gryce. He performs with the Francesca Bertazzo Hart Quintet formed by Gianluca Carollo on trumpet and flugelhorn, Ettore Martin on tenor sax, Beppe Pilotto on bass and Marco Carlesso on drums.

Friday 18 October, double performance.
17.30, at the San Girolamo Theatre, “Donne e Jazz, avventure musicali” (Women and Jazz, musical adventures); a concert-lesson with the singers Michela Lombardi, Titta Nesti and Stefania Scarinzi accompanied by Andrea Garibaldi on piano. This event is in collaboration with the “Sonata di mare” project, organised by Indra Bocchi. Free admission.

21.15, at the San Girolamo Theatre, the concert “Le emozioni delle voci” (The emotions of the voices). In the first set Stefania Scarinzi on vocals, Renato Sellani on piano, Nico Gori on clarinet and sax present the project “Sempre amore” (Always love).
In the second set, Titta Nesti on vocals and live electronics, Franco Santarnecchi on keyboards and percussion, Ellie Young on cello and flute present the “Muziki” project.

Saturday 19 October, 21.15, at the San Girolamo theatre, for the first time at Lucca Jazz Donna, the Giovanni Tommaso Original Project: “Plus Trio” with Sarah Mckenzie on piano and vocals, Giovanni Tommaso on bass and Nicola Angelucci on drums.
