The monument is situated in the open space next to the church of Saltocchio, in front of the entrance to the cemetery. It consists of a base and vertical element with dedicatory epigraph topped by a cross. The entire composition is encircled by an iron railing.

- Resolution of Lucca Town Council 21st May 1919.
The committee was already active at the start of 1919 when it requested an area from the state railways to make the piazza for the monument. The work was inaugurated in the same year, as attested by the monument's epigraph, which captures the immediate post-war climate, with its still strong condemnation of the more raw and mournful aspects of the "horrendous war", in contrast with the fascist exaltation that was to later eliminate any trace of criticism.
