Monumento ai caduti della frazione di S. Maria del Giudice / Monument to the fallen of the fraction of S. Maria del Giudice

The monument, situated in the central square of Santa Maria del Giudice, has a base in the form of concentric steps, with a vertical element with dedicatory epigraph, surmounted by a marbled sculpture depicting a pietà (a winged victory holding a dying soldier in her arms).
The monument was inaugurated in the piazza of the small hamlet at the base of the hills which divide Lucca from Pisa in June 1922, after being authorised in the public place that was then piazza dell'Osteria. The work was originally conceived in commemoration of the victims of the first world war. On 3rd September 1991, to mark the inauguration of the cippus to the partisans and civilians killed by the Germans at S. Maria del Giudice (in the garden next to the piazza), a commemorative plaque with the names of the victims of the second world war was added to the monument. Subsequently, the words "pace fra i popoli" (peace among peoples) was added to the pavement with stones.
