War memorial of Carignano

Monumento ai caduti della frazione di Carignano / War memorial of Carignano

The war memorial of Carignano is located in the garden in front of the local church.
The work, with stone steps, has a vertical marble plinth on which stands the statue of an foot soldier about to throw a hand grenade before charging. He is standing on a rock where the dedicatory epigraph is located.
On the vertical plinth there is a bas-relief depicting a winged victory, with headdress and trumpet, that is placing an olive branch (symbol of peace) at the feet of a cross, on a mountain rock.
The statue depicts the foot soldier in a position already present in many other monuments, likely to be a serial production by Balderi brothers of Pietrasanta.
In 1928 the Mayor of Lucca decided that the Town Council was to buy the land from the Church on request of the local pro monument Committee, to place the monument and the Park of Remembrance.
After World War II, a fasces, that was originally to be placed above the Italian coat-of-arms, was carved on the side of the base.
