The Società di Belle Arti presents a precious selection of around forty paintings by the Leghorn artist Ulvi Liegi “Colore vibrazione emozione” (Colour Vibration Emotion) on show at the Matteucci Centre in Viareggio from 28 March to 3 May.
The exhibition, curated by Francesco Palminteri, is a selection of works that spans more than half a century – from 1881 to 1935 – the time when the painter affirmed his personality as one of the most original in the Macchiaioli circle, especially in his interpretation of plein air painting.
Ulvi Liegi, anagram of Luigi Levi (1858-1939), soon became famous for his sensitivity to transpose nature according to a unique visuality. It is not by chance that at his debut in 1882 at the Promotrice Fiorentina, Arturo Carocci highlights the singularity of his”impressionism”.
In this exhibition the curators give precedence to the period before the twentieth century, as the most original and least fully explored. Contadine e pagliaio, Signora alle corse, Cortile con lavandaie, Carciofaia, Veduta di Firenze dalla via Vecchia Aretina, Sulla strada di Santa Margherita a Montici, Giardino di primavera and La moglie del pittore all belong to this phase, encapsulating the less stereotypical physiognomy of an artist with an already extremely modern sensitivity. The portrait dedicated by Corcos to Ulvi Liegi in 1881 is particularly relevant as a fragment of the initially shared path of the two contemporaries, before differences in their artistic languages lead them in separate directions.
