The photography exhibition “Elliot Erwitt: retrospective” is on show from 18 April to 13 September 2015 at the Lu.C.C.A.
What does telling the story of a great photographer through 136 shots linked to over 60 years of experience mean? Retracing his life, intercepting his passions, understanding his existential philosophy and greatness through the professionalism and originality of his photographs.
Despite having Robert Capa, Edward Steichen and Roy Stryker as mentors, Erwitt’s photography has a distinctive style – intimate, ironic, surprising, sometimes impertinent and sweetly irreverent, but always technically faultless. Even the most evocative shots are linked to chance moments, the here and now of a particular place and time, the spontaneous smile in front of an unusual scene or a visual oxymoron.
All his work are filtered by the right hemisphere of the brain, and all his images result from instantaneous mental elaboration that, through a generous use of multiple frames, freezes a moment which has caught his attention. Among all the negatives, there is always one that strikes the essential equilibrium between compositional structure and vision. “All the images should be – responds Erwitt to a question from Angela Madesani –, if not perfect, at least balanced, graphically and geographically correct. The composition is absolutely fundamental for any photograph”. […]
The exhibition runs from Tuesday to Sunday 10.00 – 19.00.
