Silvestro Lega: “storia di un’anima” (Story of a soul). Discoveries and revelations on the Macchiaioli painter at the Matteucci Centre

At almost 30 years since its publication (1987), the general catalogue by Silvestro Lega (1826-1895) still constitutes the best tool for understanding the work of the Macciaioli master.
 

The catalogue, on show at the Foundation Matteucci Centre for Modern Art from 4 July to 1 November, has been enlarged thanks to the rediscovery and authentication of numerous portraits of the Fabbroni family. It is therefore now possible to better understand Lega’s artistic and evolutive journey, and, through his work, his emotions, character and life experiences.

The division of the exhibition into chronological-thematic sections attempts, albeit in a summative way, to recompose the extraordinary split of the human and artistic life of the painter.

Putting on the exhibition was made possible thanks to loans from prestigious private collections and important public institutions.
