The familiarity of an unknown room and the nostalgia of that known: this is the journey of Alex Yuzdon

The free photography exhibition “A room for the night” by the Russian-American artist Alex Yuzdon is on show at Lo Spazio LABottega in Marina di Pietrasanta, from 30 May to 19 July.

“A ROOM FOR THE NIGHT” is Alex Yuzdon’s debut exhibition in Italy, with one in the USA in the autumn of 2015, at the sarahcrown, New York.
Hotel rooms can be strange places, full of both solitude and an illusion of familiar domesticity. They represent a home away from home, but without anything real about them, belong to no one. This dual aspect of the journey – the need to re-find oneself in a familiar yet unknown place – represents the spark of enquiry behind the exhibition “A room for the night”.

Yudzon measures the space and studies the objects within the hotel rooms he encounters along his travels, and then creates personal temporary constructions rearranging furniture, decorative items and furnishings. These transitory works are then photographed before being dismantled again. The images that emerge have a mixture of humour, absurdity and desire for intimacy.

In addition to the existing series at Pietrasanta, Yuzdon will also create new original works for both this exhibition and that in NewYork, interacting with the local places he comes across during his stay. “A ROOM FOR THE NIGHT” prompts a dialogue on the meaning of origins, home and belonging while examining our personal relationship with space, objects and desire.
