At the Museum of Satire and Caricature, temporarily housed at Villa Bertelli, are hosted the original editions of the newspaper "Le Rire" (property of the the Museum's collection) with lithographies made by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, one of the post-Impressionist artists mostly appreciated by the public, a brilliant innovator of the late nineteenth century painting and graphics.
Between 1894 and 1897, the historical period in which France had abolished censorship and the press was free to mock politicians or individuals until then considered untouchable, Lautrec collaborated with the magazine "Le Rire" the satirical newspaper created by Félix Juven, producing wonderful illustrations in which he portrays numerous celebrities from the world of cabaret, as well as scenes of Parisian social life.
The exhibition offers to visitors in addition to the originals, several enlargements of the illustrations, allowing them to fully enjoy the graphic and lithographic art of Lautrec. Furthermore, each illustration is accompanied by an explanatory note of the climate and atmosphere of the period, which brings the public closer to the grotesque characters that Lautrec loved to portray.
