The municipality of Piazza al Serchio is enclosed by the two branches of the river Serchio, to Soraggio and to Gramolazzo. It is commonly regarded as the seat of the Lombard castellum de Garfaniana, which gives its name to the region of the upper valley of the Serchio.
On the "doglioni" that mark the entrance to the village, arriving from Lucca along the bottom of the valley, stands the medieval fortress of Castelvecchio, to protect the stone village of St. Michael, the first nucleus of the town.
In the days of the end of July relives the Middle Ages through the streets, the squares, the old stone bridge.
