Singing in "ottava rima" has ancient and illustrious origins in the Italian culture and is based on eight-syllable, six alternating rhyme and the last two in rhyming couplets ABABABCC according to the scheme.
It's the form that Ludovico Ariosto learned at the time of his stay in Lucca, and with whom he wrote his Orlando Furioso.
This poetic form is widespread in the group ranging from Sardinia to Abruzzo through Tuscany and Lazio. Using improvised octaves singing a cappella, the metrical pattern is fixed and tuned on a melodic line, which may change slightly from one area to the other of the various regions.
With the eighth fixed module, many aspirants "poets" or "singers" or simply ordinary people, sometimes even illiterate, could try their hand at tales of facts, stories, or to compete, in contrast, on two contrasting subjects without need know the music or to have musical instruments, using only their creativity and voice.
The skill of the poet, is to close the eighth with a rhyme that can sometimes be difficult: those who follow not only respect the theme, must begin with a verse that has the same rhyme, just to chain the eighth.
The Academy Lucchese Bandettini Teresa was born as a territorial presence of LIPE and is particularly interested in impromptu poetry in eighth rhyme and all forms of poetic improvisation.
