In 1783, a group of citizens set up as Accademia degli Aerostatici built the first real theater of the city that replaced the old "big room of comedies" located in the adjacent palazzo Pretorio. Since then, this pleasant place of aggregations was widely used: here were recited comedies, held balls and events related to the carnival.
Over time innumerable expansion or restructurings works as wella as fires have happened. Among the mostly represented shows during 1800 there were comedies by Goldoni as well as Alfieri and Shakespeare tragedies. Also opera and operetta were widely represented obtaining considerable success. In 1902 the theater, for the first time, was the site of a movie broadcast. Its present appearance dates back to 1966.
Today, the teatro Comunale is used both as a cinema, and as a stage for a number of shows. Every year in winter it is home to a various theater season with the first names of the top national art scene.
