For over ten years now the Ente Chiesa San Martino di Lucca in collaboration with the Department responsible for the environment and historical buildings of Lucca and Massa Carrara has carried out, not without difficulty, a long process of restoration of the north transept of the cathedral that included its the structural consolidation and the restoration of sculptures and frescoes, as well as of the seventeenth century Chapel of the Sanctuary.
Finally the work has been completed and the ceiling of this wing of the transept has returned to being a beautiful starry blue sky studded with sacred images, while marble, stucco and frescoes have been returned to their former splendor.
That's why on Monday, April 3 the Archbishop of Lucca Monsignor Italo Castellani, the rector of the cathedral institution, Don Mauro Lucchesi, the mayor, Alessandro Tambellini, the superintendent, Luigi Ficacci and the President of the Foundation Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, Arturo Lattanzi invite the citizens and all art lovers at 11:30 am to the inauguration ceremony.
After many years the north transept of the cathedral can be accessed again and admired it in all its splendour. Among the jewels kept in this wing of the church, there are the already mentioned frescoed ceilings, as well as the amazing Chapel of the Sanctuary in which was relocated the Renaissance altarpiece of the Virgin and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Stephen, painted by Fra 'Bartolomeo in 1509, and the funerary monument of the Guidiccioni bishops, a spectacular marble architecture of the seventeenth century.
