The ongoing restoration of the cathedral of Lucca, whose results are progressively revealed to the public since the exhibition on Matteo Civitali in 2004, allows you to return to talk about the history, works and architecture of the cathedral, the spiritual center of Diocese, place of acceptance and diffusion of new languages “‹”‹and styles.
It is scheduled today, 16 June at 4 pm at the Suffredini Hall of the municipality of Castelnuovo – "Il tempietto del Volto Santo tra arredi e riallestimenti" Chiara Lussu presents the newsstand welcoming the venerated image of the Holy Face.
Ever since its arrival, the great wooden Crucifix became a symbol of Lucca and its territory: the great veneration reserved by the inhabitants to the sacred icon over time generated the desire and the need to find a place within the Cathedral worthy of its importance. To this need he answered in 1482 the commission by Domenico Bertini da Gallicano of a new chapel that hosted the Holy Face: Matteo Civitali realized the incredible work that still stands today along the left nave in the Cathedral of San Martino. Realizing a small building in a large temple, along with the choice of the central plant that immediately reminds us of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, shows us already a unique and significant solution.
