Dramatic peaks overlooking the sea, deep valleys, emerald lakes: the Alpi Apuane, rising just a few kilometers from the Versilia coast and reaching almost 2,000 meters, offer one of the most striking natural landscapes in Tuscany.
Since 1985, this area has been protected by the Regional Park, which was included in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in 2011. The area, which includes Versilia, Garfagnana, and, further north, a portion of Lunigiana, is also part of the European Natura 2000 network, a testament to its extraordinary natural value.
The unique geographical location and diverse geological formations favor the presence of habitats rich in plant and animal species. Rare plants and flowers grow here. The area is home to species of great interest, such as the red-billed chough—the Park’s emblem—the wolf, and the golden eagle.
