The Plaster Figurine and the emigration – Didattica

During the late 19th and the early 20th centuries, Lucchesia was a land of emigrants, among which were the figurinai, craftsmen who produced and sold plaster statuettes.
Through the analysis of plaster artefacts, this educational activity delves into the history of local crafts and of the related emigration process that took place around the turn of the 20th century.
The educational activity is arranged in the form of a guided and simulated research project: indeed, students go through the various stages of research: they examine documents, formulate and prove hypotheses, and organize the acquired data.

Schedule
Session I: Historical and social analysis of local crafts; research into the iconography of plaster figurines through use of archival documents.
Session II: Guided tour of the Museo della Statuina di gesso (the Museum of the Plaster Figurine) of Coreglia Antelminelli and visit to the adjacent laboratory to thoroughly explore "plaster moulding techniques".
Session III: Revision of the acquired knowledge and opportunity to dwell on the subjects covered during the previous sessions.
