The Museum documents the history of the ancient population of the Garfagnana from the Bronze Age to the Ligurian and Etruscan settlements, with particular regard to the Apuan Ligurians. The presentation of the materials provided by the individual inhabited areas is preceded by a section which ideally connects the exhibition. The museum is housed in the fortress, built in the twelfth century, but restored and enlarged in the following centuries, it was also the seat of the poet Ludovico Ariosto when he held the position of commissioner of the Duke of Eeste.
