Theatre, cabaret, modern dance, ballet, music of every kind, exhibitions, literary meetings: the Festival “La Versiliana” which takes place during the months of July and August in Marina di Pietrasanta, offers events of great importance, attracting people with the oddest and most diverse interests. The festival’s jam packed programme offers important shows, light-hearted events, and the latest in the experimental genre. Everything takes place within the framework of the same suggestive park, a vast typically Mediterranean bush area bought by the Town council in 1980. The festival and park take their name from the villa “La Versiliana”, which is famous for hosting Gabriele D’Annunzio at the beginning of the 1900’s. Here he wrote the verses of Alycone. The children’s area is particularly well looked after. There is a creative workshop which guides the boys and girls to the fruition and production of shows.

Fondazione La Versiliana
The first summer theatre season in the park of the Versiliana took place in 1968, run by the Azienda Autonoma di Soggiorno della Riviera della Versilia. Since 1975, activities linked to the theatre have been managed by the Town Council of Pietrasanta, who in 1979, managed to buy the park and the Villa Versiliana. The first “Versiliana” festival took place in 1980 under the artistic direction of Franco Martini. In the years following, the section dedicated to dance was introduced, as well as “Incontri al caffè, held by Romano Battaglia. In these afternoon meetings famous people from the world of culture, showbiz, and politics speak with the public in an atmosphere which aims to recreate the tradition of the cultural cenacles which made the Versiliana famous at the beginning of the 1900’s.
