Council of Barga
The “Accademia degli Indifferenti” (tha Academy of Indifferents) was formed on the 23rd April 1688, its main aim being that of spreading a passion for theatre and culture in general. In 1689 when the Academy was, for a long time now called “dei Differenti”, a small theatre was built which was then knocked down and rebuilt at the end of the 1700’s under the direction of Michele Lippi. The new theatre, furnished with three level of boxes, was inaugurated on the 19th of july 1795 with the performances “Il Matrimonio Segreto” and Giannina e Bernardone” by Cimarosa.
Since 1967, thanks to the initiative of Peter Hunt and Gillian Armitage, the theatre hosts “Opera Barga” in summer, one of the most interesting national opera festivals. In 1985 the Town Council bought the Theatre and began the work of renovation ended in 1998. Since 1986 the Town Council, together with the association Polyphonia, promotes the contest “Barga Jazz”.
