In the Easter period in the Province of Lucca there are may ritual and traditional events.
On Thursday and Friday several processions take place in the villages, with the participation of the clergy, of the confraternities with their uniforms, with songs from the official liturgy, with the village bands, the suggestive oil illuminations, and sometimes with groups of walk-ons staging Christ’s Passion.
A very characteristic procession is the “Processione dei Crocioni”, which takes place in Castiglione di Garfagnana on Holy Thursday. The believers follow a man dressed as the Christ, that carries a heavy wooden cross, with his feet in chain. Nobody but the prior of the Confraternity knows the identity of the penitent: in the afternoon the prior shuts him in a big cupboard in the sacristy, and he remains there till the procession. After having walked the streets of the village, often with bleeding feet, he is shut again in the same cupboard, from where he leaves late at night.
