The Viareggio Town Council Officefor the Arts, in collaboration with the Agorà association, present an exhibition dedicated to the Viareggio born master Serafino Beconi. His works, on show from July 10th to August 1st at Villa Paolina, are pervaded by a spirit of rebellion and a profound sense of life and the happiness of being alive.
Serafino Beconi was born in Torre del Lago in 1925. In 1945 he qualified as a teacher and as is the tradition of Viareggio born artists, he taught himself to paint and started producing work. In 1954 he formed part of the Versilia Centre for the Fine Arts along with Marcucci, Santini, Catarsini, Pardini and others. He has participated in numerous group shows and has had many one-man exhibitions. It was in 1964 that he first exhibited his Sant’Anna series with 140 paintings and 75 drawings.
1971 was the year that he exhibited “Dodici ritratti di Stefania Sandrelli” (Twelve portraits of Stefania Sandrelli) in Lucca, and along with Franco Signorini, won the public contest for the artistic embellishment of the new sports stadium. In 1974 there was a repetition of his one-man exhibition on the Sant’Anna massacre in Pietrasanta. In 1990 he founded the quarterly periodical “SINOPIA”. He died at his home in Viareggio, after suffering a long illness, in February, 1997.
