Council of Pietrasanta

In the middle of the 17th century, the city government had already decided to set aside a hall in the Pretorio palace for theatrical performances. When, at the end of the next century during restoration and extension work on the building, this hall was eliminated, and so some noble families from Pietrasanta supplied the money to make them build a new one behind the palace. The theatre featured opere, operette and comedies as well as popular traditional performances typical of the area such as the “Maggi” and the “Befanate” which are tied to rural , folkloric rituals. The theatre was bought by the town council in 1928 and after much restructuring, assumed in 1966, its present form with its stalls and gallery.
