In past centuries, Bagni di Lucca was a holiday resort for the elite, its thermal waters being famous throughout Europe.
The theatre, which sprang up through the initiative of some inhabitants gathered in the “Academy dei Provvidi”, brightened up the summer season and was an important cultural centre for the village during the winter period.
It was reopened to the public in 1986 and since then, has hosted an interesting winter season with performances by important national theatre companies. The Council Culture Office and the association “Il Teatraccio” are responsible for the programmes of the Theatre.
In Spring, the “Regional Festival Theatre for Schools” takes place and is of high formative value. For around 11 days, performances realised by the students of Tuscan schools take place on the theatre stage

The “Academy dei Provvidi” was formed in 1790 and its members, each contributing 50 gold pieces, committed themselves to the building of the theatre which was to be used for great performances as well as a meeting and entertainment place for the inhabitants of the community. The building was constructed, although small in dimension, using the great theatre of the period as a model, and was furnished with various tiers of boxes. The liveliest season for the “Teatro Accademico” coincided with Bagni di Lucca’s peak period as a holiday resort. Princess Elisa Baciocchi Bonaparte, the sovreign of Lucca, attended performances in the “Teatro Accademico” more than once and even performed, impersonating Fedra in the Tragedy of Racine. In the 20th century, the theatre hosted performances by the local “Società Filodrammatica”, the “Circolo Universitario del Lima”, and was used as a cinema hall.
