“Le libere donne di Magliano” (The free women of Magliano), at the Giglio Theatre in Lucca, is the last of the events celebrating the centenary of the birth of Mario Tobino. On the exact same date as his birthday, January 16, the Fondazione Mario Tobino wishes to remember the poet, writer and psychiatrist with this free performance organised by Lucca Town Council and the Province of Lucca, and staged with the direction of Andrea Buscemi, interpretation of Livia Castellana and music of Niccolò Buscemi.
At the Giglio Theatre, on Sunday, January 16, at 6pm, the personal stories of the female figures narrated in one of the most well-known novels by Tobino are brought to life through the narration of the ups and downs of their time spent at the psychiatric hospital in Maggiano (referred to cryptically in the title), where Tobino had been able to observe and meet with them as a physician. The work, written in the form of a diary, expresses Tobino’s viewpoint of the mentally ill as people worthy of esteem, respect and love; this pioneering text opened the way to a new consideration of mental disturbances and those who bear their scars.
Tickets are free, with limited availability: it is necessary to book with the Fondazione Mario Tobino before January 14.
