Lake Massaciuccoli walks

During the carnival period, every Saturday prior to the masked parades in Viareggio, the Toscana Trekking association has organized a selection of walks around Lake Massaciuccoli.

A pathway that winds around Lake Massaciuccoli, between the Apuan Alps and the sea, among the archaeological remains of a Mansio and roman thermal baths; evocative nature trails through the reeds on the banks of the lake with breath-taking panoramas. On the trail of the historical Venulei family, a well-constructed itinerary allows for getting to know Lake Massaciuccoli in terms of history, nature and landscape, in a day which gives the opportunity to grasp the spirit of this area between Massaciuccoli and Compignano, with its historical Villas (including that where Paolina Bonaparte was famously held prisoner by no less than 80 Austrian soldiers during Napoleon’s One Hundred Days). Visit to the Oasi Lipu museum and the raised nature trails on the lake for the observation of the marshland birdlife, with the rare Bittern heron, and a peculiar vegetation, with carnivorous plants and living fossils.

Full-day programme

Meeting at 9.45 am at the “Le Terme” Bar car-park in Massaciuccoli (LU) (NB: for all communications please telephone 340 3006065). Expected return 6.30 pm. Participants should provide for their own packed-lunch.

Technical information: route of medium-difficulty with some circular deviations; total distance around 7000 m; uphill 250 m; average time of distance covered 3h 30’. Besides following the nature trails on the lake, the day includes visits to the small Oasi Lipu museum, the Mansio and Roman Thermal Baths.

It is advisable to bring a day rucksack with enough drinking water and a packed lunch; wear sports clothes and trekking shoes.  

Cost: €12 per person + € 2.50 for the Museum and Lipu Nature Trails

Departure requires a minimum of 10 participants

The quota excludes: cost of journey to reach the meeting place, lunch, museum, park and monument entrance fees… unless stated as otherwise in “The quota includes”.
