The “Academy dei Provvidi” was formed in 1790 and its members, each contributing 50 gold pieces, committed themselves to the building of the theatre which was to be used for great performances as well as a meeting and entertainment place for the inhabitants of the community. The building was constructed, although small in dimension, using the great theatre of the period as a model, and was furnished with various tiers of boxes. The liveliest season for the “Teatro Accademico” coincided with Bagni di Lucca’s peak period as a holiday resort. Princess Elisa Baciocchi Bonaparte, the sovreign of Lucca, attended performances in the “Teatro Accademico” more than once and even performed, impersonating Fedra in the Tragedy of Racine. In the 20th century, the theatre hosted performances by the local “Società Filodrammatica”, the “Circolo Universitario del Lima”, and was used as a cinema hall.
