Ancient Camellia of Lucchesia show

Mostra delle Antiche Camelie della Lucchesia / Ancient Camellia of Lucchesia show

The camellia flower show in the Lucchesia, is one of those events that is very interesting to different types of people. This is an important event for the botanist, the art historian and the flower enthusiast. It takes place in March when the camellia blooms, in the districts of S.Andrea and Pieve di Compito, in the municipality of Capannori. However the flower show , very interesting from a botanic point of view, is not the only attraction in this event. During the period of the flower show, there is the opportunity to visit some of the gardens of the surrounding historical villas such as Villa Orsi, where you can admire examples of 17th century camellias in the splendour of their historic context. The highest concentration of the great villas of the nobility in the Lucchesia can be found in the area of Capannorese. At the beginning of the 1800’s, the fashion for cultivating camellias took off amongst the owners of the villas, and their already marvellous gardens, were enriched with this exotic plant and its wonderful flowers. The skills involved in cultivating this plant reached a very high level, so much so that a local variety of camellia was selected. It was called the “Stella di Compito”. An experimental cultivaton of the Camellia Sinensis, the tea plant, was recently introduced in this same area and was highly successful.
