Artists for freedom: oppression crumbles to become art.

Artisti per la libertà: l'oppressione si sgretola per diventare arte. / Artists for freedom: oppression crumbles to become art.

Thanks to the French collector Sylvestre Verger, since 1990, fragments of the Berlin Wall, painted from the early 80s by artists from all over the world, have been collected and re-composed, to become a thought provoking work of art, on show from 16 February to 16 March at the complex of S. Agostino Church in Pietrasanta.

The ambassador of the event is the musician Michael Guttman, who has owned the exhibition for little over a year.

“Artists for freedom” has been expanding over the years. Some works have been commissioned directly, others are the result of contests within international exhibitions, with a total of 48 works, including paintings, sculptures and installations.

The concrete has been used as a canvas, the emotional reactions of the artists have become testimony of a past that, transfigured in art, acquires a universal and timeless value. It appeals to remembrance so that the message of freedom will remain for future reconstruction.

The exhibition, promoted by Pietrasanta Town Council Office for Culture, has been held at Paris, Berlin and Moscow to mark the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 1996, to mark the G7 of Lyon, the collection was also visited by Mikhaϊl Gorbatchev, to underline its importance.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with commentary by critic Philippe Daverio.

The exhibition remains open until 16 March, 16.00 – 19.00, closed Mondays. Free admission.
