The exhibition retraces the first thirty years of the 20th century in Italy – before, during and after World War One.
The central theme, little studied to date, is the Roman secessions.
The exhibition, at the Matteucci Centre for Modern Art, has the aim of showcasing the talents of Italian artists from the early 20th century, the currents that influenced them along with the rest of Europe, those which arrived late and those which developed independently on the peninsula.
Naturally, the historical context is composite. For this reason, the exhibition has been divided into three temporal sections.
The first, curated by Alda Masonero, is entitled “Under the stimulus of the new century”.
This part is characterised by the typically Italian divisionism movement, but also by pre-futurism, remnants of renaissance in Florence and the influence of Cezanne and the French impressionists.
“Roman Secessions – four large demonstrations one after the after in the capital between 1913 and 1916” is the title chosen for the exhibition’s central section (curated by Susanna Ragionieri).
Here we find the multiple threads of the time: the French and Middle European influence, futurism contrasting with officially received art, still firmly rooted in the past, the search for speed and movement, but above all the need for an identity, in the midst of all these artistic currents and the instability of a world war.
The exhibition concludes with the section: “Return to order, Italian 20th century and beyond” prepared by Nicoletta Colombo.
At this point Italy, like the rest of Europe, felt the need to return to pure forms, and give the go ahead to a new classicism, passing from synthetic realism to magical realism, only later to turn into expressionism.
