Capannori marks Remembrance Day 2012, established by the Region of Tuscany in memory of the extermination and persecution of the Jewish population and the Italians deported to Nazi camps, with a series of important events that, from January 23 to February 5, are hosted by ‘Artè’, the Town Council’s new cultural space in via Carlo Piaggia in Capannori. “Restored memories: the extermination of the useless” is common title of a number of exhibitions, a town council meeting, film projections and debates.
The program of the event, promoted by the Town Council, in collaboration with the Institute of History of the Resistance in Lucca, the association Realab, Usl 2, Forum Giovani and Anpi, Scuola per la Pace (School for Peace), aims to provide the opportunity to examine the theme of constraint, also physical, experienced by the mentally ill in mental asylums, before their closure, and the mental hospital criminal detention centres, still existing in Italy. Particular attention is given to the living conditions of patients at the ex-hospitals of Maggiano and Volterra.
