September 27, the Council of Europe celebrates the “European Day of Languages” with a one-day symposium of meetings in Pisa (in the morning) and Lucca (in the afternoon).
This event, “Knowing languages to build Europe”, is sponsored by the European Commission and European Parliament and involves the participation of the highest-ranking academic and civic authorities and general managers of the Translation and Interpreting Units of the European Parliament and European Commission.
The morning session includes Gianni Vattimo, Euro MP for the Culture Committee, who will give a talk entitled “Europa multilingue”, Guido Paduano, who will give a lecture on “Lingua e letteratura”, and a concluding speech by Andrea Ronchi, the Minister for EU Policy. The highlight of the afternoon session in Lucca is Umberto Eco’s plenary lecture entitled “Son tutte belle le lingue del mondo” (All the world’s languages are beautiful).
