The valley of the river Serchio and that of the Lima River (now the provinces of Lucca and Pistoia) have been for centuries the scenarios of an ongoing territorial dispute between the republics of Florence, Lucca and the Este domains.
The consequences of this continuous state of alert can be found even today in the territory, in the remains of the defensive constructions of various epochs.
The author has cataloged, described, identified and cataloged scientifically, almost a hundred of castles, fortresses and fortified villages that over the centuries have defended the valley. The investigation covers the ancient vicarious Gallicano, Barga, Coreglia, Val di Lima and Diecimo.
