L'OTTOCENTO APERTO AL MONDO

At the Matteucci Centre for Modern Art is once again on display a major exhibition dedicated to the masters of  ''Italian Impressionism". The beautiful art nouveau villa, set just few steps from Viareggio's waterfront, will host masterpieces by De Nittis, Boldini Zandomeneghi and no less superb works by other artists such as Signorini, Lega and other protagonists of the "Macchiaiolo" period.

The paintings are from the private collections of Enrico Piceni (1901 – 1986) and Mario Borgiotti (1906 – 1977), two refined intellectuals and great art experts, resident in Milan, who in the aftermath of World War II tacitly competed to grab the best artworks.

Piceni, curated the Medusa and Thriller book series for Arnoldo Mondadori, he was a translator of Dickens and Brönte, a friend of Montale and Vergani. He was a great art lover and admirer of the "Italians in Paris", that is: Giuseppe De Nittis, Federico Zandomeneghi and Giovanni Boldini. He looked for the works of these artists and was able to grab items of sublime quality.

Borgiotti, was born in Livorno, instead. He arrived in Milan after having "trained" at Le Giubbe Rosse in Florence (famous cafe, meeting point of many intellecutals in the early XXth century). He was a friend of Papini, Cecchi and Soffici. Musician and violinist. But especially in love with "his" macchiaioli, whose works, of course, he was attempting, after an almost maniacal selection, to lead into his collection.

Giuliano Matteucci, curator of the exhibition and director of the Matteucci Foundation for Modern Art, was able to offer to the public, jointly, the personal collections of the two "rivals", a unique opportunity, especially for the suggestion given by the cultural confrontation, and because many of the works on display have been "private" for decades, invisible and not granted to any exhibition or museum.

Eventually, the masterpieces of these Milanese collections are accompanied by a small, essential nucleus of other works for comparison, which were also selected among the very best of both the Ecole Italienne and the Macchiaioli's.

In relation to the exceptional nature of the exhibition, worthy of a major international museum, its duration will be particularly extensive. The exhibition in fact will end on February 26 of 2017.

During July and August, every Tuesday night at 21:00 guided tour of the exhibition. Entry in this case will cost

€ 12,00 per person.
