Once  rare, now the square has become one of the city living, with cafes,  restaurants and places of art collected here over the centuries from  medieval walls and the complex of the three cloisters of St. Francis,  the Renaissance park of Villa Bottini , the contemporary art museum Lu.CCA
In the last weekend of June, Middle Ages resurfaces in the square for two  days of entertainment, traditions and gastronomy, from 10:00 to 24:00.
All the old town of Lucca will be crossed in these two days by historical parades of ladies, men-at-arms, drummers and flag bearers who will join after  the reading of the "Bando", in Piazza San Francesco.
The ocasion  for this great medieval festival is the Torneo dei Balestrieri (cross baw tournement) on  Sunday, June 5, where Contrade San Paolino and the Company of Archers  will compete for the coveted prize painting by artist Dionigi Angelo  Fornaciari, depicting the Holy Face with the background of a crossbow.
Next, for all, a giant "game of the duck".
In the square with two days continued eto time, a medieval market with the blacksmith, the astrologer, the white magician, the basket maker, exhibitions of falconry, jugglers musicians historical dances with the Group of Ancient dances Balestrieri Lucca Company consists of 18 dancers amateur that reconstruct the atmosphere of the sumptuous banquets of the Renaissance courts and enjoyable holidays of the folk tradition square.
At lunch and dinner, the Medieval Desco offers soup, tordelli with meat sauce, pork cooked with wood, chicken nuggets, chips, peas and cheese, chocolate cake with beaks and vegetables, beer, water, wine, spiced wine honey and spices.
