“L’urlo dell’immagine” (The Scream of the image): engravings and woodcuts from Italian Expressionism

From 26 July to 28 December, the exhibition “The Scream of the image. Italian expressionism“ is on show at the GAMC in Viareggio.

The exhibition springs from the partnership between the Town Councils of Viareggio and La Spezia (where it has already run), with the aim of bringing prestige to the Italian expressionist movement, exhibiting and demonstrating its significant artistic production.

The undisputed protagonists of the cultural life of 20th century cultural life were Lorenzo Viani for Viareggio and the magazine L’Eroica for La Spezia; from here the exhibition unfolds with 120 works by famous and lesser known artists who welcomed and embraced the expressionist movement to then, in some cases, to pass to the futurist movement.

L’urlo dell’immagine features printed works of art such as engravings, woodcuts and woodblock matrices, excluding drawings, bringing together the varied voices of 20th century Italian Expressionism, concentrating on certain key elements: simplification, deformation, attention to the Italian ‘Primitives’.

The exhibition is open Tuesday to Sunday. Hours: 15.30-19.30.
