Incontri alla GAMC / Meetings at the GAMC

The GAMC, “Lorenzo Viani” Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, presents two free events:

Saturday 7 November, from 5pm: Intorno a Rosai e Viani. Notes on a 20th century story in Tuscany

The second event dedicated to Lorenzo Viani; a conference by Giovanna Uzzani, historian and teacher of history of art. The initiative is connected with the Ottone Rosai exhibition at the GAMC, of the murals of Florence railway station Santa Maria Novella, two large works on loan from the Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, exhibited in front of the paintings created by Viani for Viareggio station.

Sunday 8 November, at 5pm, dedicated to the Lucca sculptor Giannetto Salotti. This artist’s work will be presented by Luca Nannipieri, author of the written critique of the graphic work by the same name, Franca Severini, journalist, art editor and curator of the Salotti Collection.

The Vera and Giovanni Pieraccini Collection consists of around 2300 works of art by mainly 20th century artists, for the most part from Italy and Western Europe, but with a significant number from the rest of the world, with a total number of 699 recognised authors.

The graphic works count for over two thirds of the collection, together with paintings and sculptures mainly by 20th century Italian artists. There are also substantial sections of craft and art works from Asia and South America, some of which would be classified as “ethnic art”, and archaeological artefacts from the mediterranean region and beyond, as well as various objects dating to the early 20th century.

The collection also testifies to the biography of Giovanni Pieraccini and his wife Vera, and was formed little by little through their life experience, thanks to numerous encounters, journeys, “loves at first sight”, but first and foremost to their true passion and curiosity for any form of artistic expression, especially those of their contemporaries.

Viareggio – Giovanni’s hometown – and Rome – the city where the couple lived – both play an important role in some of the collection’s main parts, and sheds further light on the primary characteristic of their collecting criteria – direct contact and knowledge of places and artists.
