Open doors at the Lucchese Music Institute with concerts, guided tours, lessons. A day to get to know the heart of Lucca's musical tradition.
The earliest news that witnesses the existence of music schools in Lucca can be found in sources of the VII Century; The teaching of music was subsequently always considered to be of primary importance and indispensable for the continuity of musical tradition, in a city where the art of sounds has always enjoyed a remarkable space and has given birth to internationally renowned musicians.
The present Institute of Musical Studies Luigi Boccherini originated on August 14, 1842, when Duke Carlo Ludovico of Bourbon issued a decree with which he reorganized public music schools on the basis of a unitary regulation; The Musical Institute was born whose direction was entrusted to Giovanni Pacini.
The Library of the Music Institute L. Boccherini of Lucca was born on June 19, 1837, thanks to a decision of the Duke of Lucca Carlo Lodovico, as a music archive of the Chapel of the Court. In its long history, as well as of the material of current use, it has enriched a considerable amount of manuscripts and ancient prints of considerable value, so that its bibliographic heritage currently stands at about 21,000 units and is divided between a central and Four antique funds.
The Sacred Music Fund, set up in 1837 to equip the Lucchese Music Chapel in its archive, contains 895 pieces largely manuscripts dating from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries and is to be considered as the core of the Boccherini Music Library.
The Puccini Fund, 696 manuscripts for most autographs, is certainly important. The collection also includes a group of autographs by Giacomo Puccini Junior, dating from the period of his Milanese studies (1880-1883), which represents almost all of what remained of the great works of the great composer.
The Auditorium is housed in the seventeenth-century church "del Suffragio". The interior, with a single nave with side chapels, decorated with stucco, was completed in 1675 with the construction of a majestic altar delimited by four spiral columns and topped by a broken tympan ornamented by angels, which by Elisa Baciocchi was Donated in the 19th century to the Cathedral of Ajaccio, where it is still located.
