Created in 1956 on the initiative of a local committee and carried on, with quick and substantial development, thanks to willpower and people's participation, the Palio is a competition between eight districts of Historical Versilia (Oak, Madonnina, Well, Golden LIon, Lizard, Deer, Frog and Bridge ) that takes place on the first Sunday of May.
The Palio dei Micci (Jackasses' race) is part of the historical traditions of Tuscany and is definitely the first event of its kind in the province of Lucca. Its main value lies in the genuine popular character, emphasized by the massive participation of the eight districts' members, about two thousand, in the parade in historical costumes and in the race for the prestigious banner. The theatrical performances take place on the stadium grass pitch before the donkey race. The show is huge. Thousands of costumed characters give life to a fantastic and impressive parade full of color, music, songs and joy which is crowned by the donkey race.
