The Lucca “Versilia Historica” Institute has organised a series of conferences on the history of Versilia in the “Rodolfo Cope di Valromita” Hall at Palazzo Pellegrini in Querceta.
SATURDAY 7 NOVEMBER 2015 – 4.30pm
GIOVANNI CIPOLLINI
PIETRO MARCHI, FIRST SOCIALIST MAYOR OF SERAVEZZA
The Seravezza-born Pietro Marchi (1877-1960), was one of the leading political, administrative and trade union figures of Versilia in the first half of the 20th century.
Leader of the workers’ movement and important exponent of the PSI, in 1911 he became Seravezza’s first socialist mayor, actively striving to improve the social and economic conditions of workers. With the rise of Fascism, he suffered continual persecutions and confinement.
He took part in the resistance as a member of the clandestine organisation and was voted mayor of Seravezza by the CLN, immediately after the Liberation, holding office from 22 September 1944 to 12 April, 1946, initiating the long and difficult process of post-war reconstruction.
An important, but, like so many, not adequately recognised figure of Versilian history.
