The conference explores the audiovisual history of Turandot, from the 1958 television broadcast from the RAI studios in Milan to the recent filming of several performances that include a significant video component (most recently, Vasily Barkhatov’s Turandot for the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in 2023), making their production on video a daunting but fascinating challenge. The conference includes excerpts from several historic Turandot video recordings and aims to reflect on the questions that the unique dramaturgy of Puccini’s opera poses for audiovisual media.
