The celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the anointment of Pope Leo X also include an exhibition at the Fortino in Forte dei Marmi, open from 19 July to 12 September, with drawings and documents signed by Michelangelo Buonarroti for the façade of the Church of S. Lorenzo in Florence.
This regards an appointment given to him from the Pope himself, for which Michelangelo opted to use marble from the Versilia area, where this sector was enjoying a period of strong expansion in the Medici period.
The exhibition aims to recall the mark this sculptor-architect left in the Versilia area, after signing a contract at Pietrasanta, with eight stonemasons and the quarryman Angelotto, for the supply of all the marble used to construct the façade of the Medici Family Church.
