Museum and archaeological complex of the Cathedral of Lucca – Didactics

The complex is composed of the Cathedral Museum, the Church and Baptistery of Santi Giovanni e Reparata and the Sacristy of the Cathedral. The Museum was created in 1992 to preserve both the furnishings made since the early Middle Ages for the performance of the solemn liturgical functions of the Cathedral and the sculptural and pictorial works which, removed from the original location for conservation reasons or replaced by more updated authors, they lay, barely accessible to the eye, in the deposits or in the sacristy. The Baptistery and the church of Santi Giovanni e Reparata qualify above all for the presence of a vast archaeological area open to the public in the spring of 1992 after an important excavation campaign, which began in 1969, which brought to light the finds from the Roman era (domus e terme) and the primitive layout of the early Christian basilica of the IVth-Vth century and of the adjacent contemporary baptistery. The sacristy of the cathedral has housed the funeral monument of Ilaria del Carretto since 1995, located since 1842 in the left transept of the Cathedral and removed from here to allow consolidation work in this area of the building. The wedding between Ilaria del Carretto of the Marquises of Savona and Paolo Guinigi, who was Lord of Lucca between 1400 and 1430, was celebrated with great pomp in February 1403.
