Ponte Nero

Ponte Nero

Ponte Nero (Black Bridge) spans the narrow and deep gorge of the stream Lima, in the hamlet of Scesta, in the district of Bagni di Lucca. The water flow produced rock-erosion, thus forming near the bridge large pools in which water colours a stunning turquoise. The sandstone and round-arched bridge was built in the 14th century by local masons. A chapel with a porch was built nearby the bridge, as customarily done due to arising difficulties or to the importance of the work. Divine protection was thus invoked to accomplish and protect the bridge.
