The Puccini Museum – Birthplace is located in the second floor apartment of an ancient building in the heart of the city of Lucca, where Giacomo Puccini was born on 22nd December 1858. In this house the composer lived the years of childhood and early youth, the years of familiarization with music and the first systematic studies, before moving to Milan, where in 1884 he began that opera career that made him one of the composers best known and most loved in history. The Museum houses original furnishings, precious objects that belonged to the musician, including the Steinway & Sons piano on which he composed Turandot, autograph scores of youth compositions (the first work, the Orchestra Prelude re-emerged in 1999, the 4-part Mass of 1880 ) many letters from and to Puccini (notable those of Giulio Ricordi), paintings, photographs, sketches, memorabilia, and precious documents attesting to the composer's work, such as the drafts of the librettos by Tosca and Fanciulla del West, full of handwritten notes and sketches music. Among the gifts, the Turandot costume stands out, made according to the sketch by Umberto Brunelleschi and worn by Maria Jeritza for the first performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1926.
